Principles for Leading Discussion

  • creative writing workshop model: say what you notice and what you experience as a reader — assume intentionality
  • start with the text & point to the text: read quotes out loud — give people time to get to the page — tie what you notice to the part that made you notice it
  • ask questions that are questions: what do you feel like you are still figuring out? what are you stuck on?
  • make connections inside and outside the book: this part is like this other part / for some reason I found myself thinking about _______
  • leave space for silence — build in time to think where no one is talking
